Plunge Pool Installation in Lynnfield, MA

North of Route 128, Lynnfield's deep loam digs easily for a plunge pool. South of it, ledge is common. Our first visit checks the soil and the wetland map.

What to know before you start.

Lynnfield has its own swimming pool bylaw, and it's about neighbors. A pool can't unduly interfere with how the people next door use their land, and its lights have to be shaded and aimed away from them. On the tighter post-war lots in South Lynnfield, that guides where the pool sits and how we light it. The fence itself follows the state building code's barrier rules.

Then there's water, in two ways. Digging within 100 feet of a wetland or 200 feet of a stream, which takes in plenty of yards around Pillings Pond and Suntaug Lake, needs Conservation Commission review first. And Lynnfield Center Water District homes follow Ipswich River tiers that end in no outdoor water use at Level 5, so the fill date waits on the district.

Local rules that can affect your plunge pool project.

  • Check before working near wetlands

The town asks residents to check with Planning & Conservation before any yard work within 100 feet of a wetland, 200 feet of a stream, or in a mapped floodplain.

  • Pool lights and neighbors

Lynnfield's swimming pool bylaw says a family pool can't be built or run in a way that unduly interferes with neighbors' use of their land, and pool lights must be arranged and shaded so they reflect away from adjacent properties.

  • Filling a pool under water tiers

The Lynnfield Center Water District allows only hand-held outdoor watering at Level 4, where non-essential use is prohibited, and no outdoor water use at any time at Level 5. Its page doesn't mention pools by name, so confirm with your district before a fill.

Will pool lights bother my neighbors in Lynnfield?

They aren't supposed to. The town's swimming pool bylaw requires pool lighting to be arranged and shaded so it reflects away from adjacent properties, so we aim and shield fixtures toward the water.

Can I fill a pool when Lynnfield Center water is restricted?

Level 5 allows no outdoor water use at all, and Level 4 limits outdoor use to hand-held hoses and bans non-essential use. The district doesn't list pools by name, so we check with it first. South Lynnfield is served by a different district with its own rules.
